Misconceptions about FIV+ cats

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is a condition in cats similar to HIV in humans, affecting their immune system and making them more susceptible to infections. Despite this, FIV-positive cats can live long, healthy, and happy lives with proper care. Providing a stress-free environment, regular veterinary check-ups, and a nutritious diet can help manage their health. These cats often end up in shelters due to misconceptions about their condition, but they are just as deserving of a loving home. Adopting an FIV-positive cat can be incredibly rewarding!

There are several common misconceptions about Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) that can lead to unnecessary fear and stigma:

1.    FIV is a death sentence: Many people believe that an FIV diagnosis means a cat will have a short and unhealthy life. In reality, with proper care, FIV-positive cats can live long, healthy lives.

2.    FIV is highly contagious: FIV is primarily spread through deep bite wounds, not through casual contact like sharing food bowls, grooming, or playing.

This means FIV-positive cats can often live with non-infected cats without transmitting the virus.

3.    FIV-positive cats are always sick: While FIV affects the immune system, many FIV-positive cats remain asymptomatic for years and can lead normal lives.

4.    FIV-positive cats should be euthanized: This is a harmful myth. FIV-positive cats can be wonderful pets and deserve loving homes just like any other cat.

Understanding these misconceptions helps in providing better care and more opportunities for FIV-positive cats to find loving homes. Consider adopting an FIV-positive cat!
